ON SEPTEMBER 11TH, six years ago, we awoke to find that our world had changed. Nearly three-thousand people lost their lives on that tragic day as the two highest buildings of the World Trade Center complex were struck by airplanes and, minutes later, collapsed, while the Pentagon was attacked and a fourth plane was reported to have crashed in Pennsylvania. For days, many of us watched the events unfold on our television screens, filled with horror, sadness, and rage at these unprecedented acts of mass murder. We waited to hear from loved ones who had been in the buildings or near Ground Zero, or perhaps flying that day, watching the heroism of the NYC firefighters, police, paramedics, rescue workers, and ordinary citizens as they risked their lives and, in many cases, died trying to save those inside and near the buildings.
Six years later, we as a country and one human family still mourn for those who died tragically on that day, and there is a profound sense of honor for those brave men and women who gave their lives so that others might live. In honoring all those who lost their lives because of what happened September 11th, we as a country and one human family must seek the answers to a whole host of unanswered questions about the events that transpired on 9/11 and the days that followed. Why, at a rare moment in history when the entire international community reached out in compassion and support, did we choose to further alienate ourselves as a nation by attacking first Afghanistan, and then Iraq? What were the real reasons why we singled out Afghanistan, when most of the cash flow and support for al-Qaeda appeared to be coming from Saudi Arabia while 14 of the 17 alleged hijackers were from Saudi Arabia? Why are there so many holes in the “official story” of 9/11, to the point that even victims’ family members are calling for a reinvestigation into what really happened that day? Why are we asking these questions still six years after the tragedy? Who is leading the movement for truth?
A RARE MOMENT IN HISTORY
After the 9/11 attacks, while the United States came together still in shock and mourning from the devastating events of that day, the international community joined with us to mourn, pray, and honor. The world urged the United States to join in a cooperative effort to understand and address the roots of terrorism, to seek justice rather than blind revenge, and to exercise restraint in whatever response was given so that no more innocent lives would be lost. It was a rare moment in history, when the U.S. had the backing of nearly every nation and could have become the leader in eradicating terrorism by itself refusing to engage in terrorism, namely war.
Unfortunately, this opportunity was lost in time as the political and media drumbeats for war grew louder, and the voices of peace at home and across the world were drowned out or shouted down in the media. The United States, out of fear rather than justice, used the victims of the 9/11 attacks as an excuse to carry out similar acts of terrorism on innocent civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq. Over four thousand innocent Afghan civilians died in the initial bombings of Afghanistan, and thousands more have died since. In Iraq, close to over 700,000 innocent men, women and children have lost their lives and countless more have been injured as a direct result of U.S. war and occupation of Iraq.
It is time to ask ourselves: if the best way to teach is by example, then what kind of example are we setting? If we hope to eradicate violence, we must eradicate the very elements that breed violence in the first place: war, poverty, abuse in all forms, and racial and religious hatred. Our invasions of these two nations have served only to strengthen these elements. No matter how many “senior Al-Qaeda leaders” or deemed terrorists the U.S. forces take out, if we continue to strengthen these elements, terrorism itself will be strengthened. There is still a chance for the United States to become the world leader in ending violence and creating a peaceful, harmonious society, but it cannot be done through war and the denial of truth.
WHERE WERE YOU WHEN IT HAPPENED?
Where were you when you first heard of the attacks? I was awoken by my roommate, London, in our Minneapolis apartment and informed that two planes had just been flown into the World Trade Center. Making my way downstairs, I sat in disbelief with her and another roommate as we watched the news coverage and the footage of the planes hitting the buildings and the buildings falling, over and over and over again.
I remember feeling many different things during this time. I felt profoundly sad at the loss of life, but also sad that somebody could be so lost as to carry out such an atrocious act on other human beings. I felt a sense of anger, but I was not angry at the Muslims, whose spiritual beliefs I could clearly see had nothing to do with the deep pain and hatred that drove the perpetrators to attack.
I also felt, from the very beginning, that war was an incorrect way to respond to these attacks. It was very clear to me, from the moment I watched the attacks on television, that the mainstream media and elements in the government were pressing for war without even stopping to gather sufficient evidence and think through a justified and effective response, let alone to mourn. I felt this was inappropriate for a nation that had just suffered such a deep tragedy. Simultaneously, I could not help but feel suspicious at the instant finger-pointing to Afghanistan and Bin Laden that was taking place. Acting on my intuition, I decided to dig deeper and research on my own what might be going on beneath the surface.
MY JOURNEY TO FIND THE TRUTH
My initial research in the days immediately following 9/11 led me to conclude that there was more to the official story than we were being told. I discovered, for example, that there was a connection between the Bush and Bin Laden families that wasn’t being reported in the media. In 1977, Osama’s brother Salem bin Laden had invested in Bush Jr.’s first oil company, Arbusto Energy, through a mutual friend and fellow National Guardsmen to Bush Junior by the name of Jim Bath. These investments were held with a bank called BCCI, a bank known to be heavily involved in drug money laundering, and a bank which the Bush family, the bin Ladens, and even Saddam Hussein were all connected with (See The Outlaw Bank: A Wild Ride into the Secret Heart of BCCI by Jonathan Beaty and S.C. Gwynne). I had no idea at the time what any of this meant, but the fact that both families had a previous connection that was being ignored was enough to convince me that something really shady was going on. Why wasn’t this all over the mainstream news?
A few months later, I saw a movie that changed my life and enhanced my understanding of the hows and whys of 9/11 a hundredfold. The movie, The Truth And Lies Of 9/11, was shown in a small Minneapolis theater to a crowd of maybe thirty or forty concerned citizens, who, like myself, had doubts about the official story and were seeking answers to their questions. In it, Michael Ruppert, a retired LAPD cop, delivers a lecture to a crowd of over 100 at Portland State University about how the U.S. government knew 9/11 was going to happen, why they let it happen, and what elements in the government, banking industry, and multinational corporations stood to gain from the war in Afghanistan.
Mike Ruppert’s own story, revealed in the movie, is both shocking and revealing of deeper truths about the secret inner workings of our own government. A decorated officer who worked in several departments with LAPD including homicide and auto theft, and whose parents had been long-term employees of the NSA (the forerunner to the CIA), Ruppert was approached while working in the narcotics unit by a CIA operative and asked, in essence, to look the other way while the CIA flooded the streets of Los Angeles with cocaine and heroin, smuggled in from overseas. He refused to cooperate, and was subsequently shot at, threatened with death, and forced out of LAPD and into hiding. Years later, he resurfaced and began to speak out about what happened to him and what he had learned since. At the beginning of The Truth And Lies of 9/11, there is a taped confrontation, which aired on C-SPAN, between Ruppert and then-CIA Director John Deutsch in 1996, during which he cites these covert drug-dealing operations by their code names and Deutsch, visibly nervous, is unable to refute his accusations.
In Truth and Lies, Ruppert reveals the connections behind the CIA dealing drugs on the streets of every major city in America since at least the 1960’s, using the profits to fund covert operations in other countries and laundering the money through the U.S. banking system. Building his case like a trial lawyer, he offers ample evidence, including declassified government documents, to demonstrate how this drug-dealing is connected with the international banking industry, showing how several former CIA directors that oversaw the agency during drug-smuggling booms are or were currently serving as Wall Street bankers and how this ties in with the unsettling fact that billions of dollars in drug money are laundered through the banking system every year.
But what does this have to do with 9/11? Ruppert states, near the beginning of the movie, that there are essentially two reasons why the U.S. went to war with Afghanistan: one is oil, and the other is drugs, within a grand scheme of political domination. The Bush Administration had already drawn up detailed plans to invade Afghanistan prior to 9/11, so it’s no surprise that Afghanistan, which was not even the main financier or headquarters of Al-Qaeda, was blamed for the attacks. The Taliban regime was so hated by the U.S. not because of its human rights violations – indeed, the U.S. has a history of financially supporting and arming repressive, dictatorial regimes, and in fact armed and supported the Taliban and Saddam Hussein even while they were openly committing such crimes.
According to Ruppert, the U.S. wanted the Taliban out of the way because, first, the religious Taliban government had ordered all the poppy farmers in Afghanistan to burn their fields. Afghanistan had once been the world’s single largest grower of poppies, the flower from which opium and heroin are made. Heroin shipments were being flown out of Afghanistan on Russian and U.S. military planes and smuggled worldwide, including into Western Europe and the United States by Russian and U.S. intelligence operatives, beginning as early as 1979. That year, the CIA began backing the Mujahadeen fighters, later to become the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, and not coincidentally, heroin-related deaths rose 77 percent in New York City alone. The huge influx of billions of dollars in drug money every year was being used to finance covert operations, and surprisingly, as Ruppert reveals, to prop up the U.S. economy as it was laundered through the U.S. banking system. The Taliban’s move, which could have been a major step toward quelling the heroin epidemic for good, disrupted these illegal, covert drug operations. One month after the Taliban were overthrown, Afghan warlords friendly to the U.S. ordered the poppy fields to be replanted, and Ruppert reports that Afghanistan is now back to being the world’s leading producer and exporter of heroin with the continued assistance of the CIA.
As for the oil connection, Ruppert reveals how for years before the invasion of Afghanistan, the Unocal oil company, along with Halliburton, the company for which Dick Cheney was then CEO, had been wanting to build a pipeline extending from Turkmenistan to Pakistan. Negotiations with the Taliban regime to build the pipeline, which took place during the late 1990’s even when it was clear that the Taliban was commiting extensive human rights violations, eventually failed because, reportedly, Taliban leaders wanted more money than Unocal was willing to pay. The oil pipeline, and the oil reserves of the region in general, were not just seen as profitable for the oil companies, but was considered strategically important by the U.S. Following the plans of The Project For A New American Century, a neo-conservative think-tank whose more prominent members included Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, and John Ashcroft, the U.S. sought to dominate the oil reserves of the Middle East and Central Asia to further consolidate American power and influence throughout the world. Thus, if the Taliban would not allow the pipeline to be built, they would have to be replaced with another regime friendly to the oil companies and U.S. interests.
To this day, the pipeline is still a work in progress, due mainly to the instability and violence that continue in certain regions through which the pipeline is scheduled to run. Unocal has claimed that they have no interest in pursuing the pipeline anymore. But interestingly enough, Hamid Karzai, the U.S. backed Afghan Prime Minister, and former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad (also former U.S. ambassador to Iraq, now U.S. ambassador to the U.N.) are both former paid consultants for…Unocal.
Throughout his presentation, Ruppert illustrates, using a very well-researched timeline that you can view at www.fromthewilderness.com, how the U.S. had ample warning that the 9/11 attacks were going to take place and not only deliberately ignored these warnings, but allowed the attacks to happen and even took steps to make sure the attacks were not stopped. Among other facts cited on the timeline, he shows how the FBI, CIA, several government officials, and even Bush and Cheney themselves received warnings in the days and weeks before 9/11 about the possibility of hijacked airliners being used as missiles, and how the jets that could have scrambled these aircraft were deliberately ordered to “stand down” by Cheney himself. Norman Mineta, who was Transportation Secretary at the time, was in the Presidential Emergency Operations Center and witnessed Cheney give the stand-down orders even as he was informed that a hijacked plane was nearing the Pentagon. Mineta’s testimony (see video below at end of article) before the 9/11 commission was censored and ommitted from the final report without explanation.
William Rodriguez, a maintenance worker at the World Trade Center’s North Tower and the last person known to have left the building alive. On 9/11, Rodriguez singlehandedly rescued 15 people, and as he was the only person at the site with the master key to the North Tower stairwells, helped save dozens more as he bravely led firefighters up the stairwell, unlocking doors along the way. He reentered the building three times to aid in rescue efforts, and was able to survive the collapse of the North Tower by diving under a fire truck. He returned to Ground Zero after his injuries had been treated to continue aiding in rescue efforts. He, along with several other survivors, claims to have heard bombs going off inside the buildings at the basement level and above prior to the collapse. He has become an outspoken advocate for reinvestigation into what happened on 9/11, and has traveled the U.S. and internationally to push for the truth and tell his story. Rodriguez is pictured here holding the master key that saved untold numbers of lives that day.
MORE UNANSWERED QUESTIONS AND INCONSISTENCIES
Ever since I saw The Truth And Lies Of 9/11, I have seen several other movies and read dozens of articles that have confirmed for me what for many must still seem unthinkable: the official story of 9/11 is a giant cover-up, a smokescreen. There are so many holes in the “official story” that one begins to question which is the real conspiracy theory: 17 men with box cutters who didn’t know how to fly hijacking four airplanes simultaneously and flying three of them to their intended targets under the coordination and leadership of a man living in a cave in Afghanistan, or government complicity for political and economic gain?
Listed here are eleven further inconsistencies and unanswered questions which are enough to raise anyone’s eyebrows to the plain fact that something much different than the official story occured on 9/11. This information is available for anyone to research and confirm on their own, and I’ve listed resources for those who feel the need to dig deeper. I do not intend to frighten anyone by revealing any of this; indeed, the idea that we have been lied to about one of the greatest tragedies in our nation’s history is enough to unsettle anyone, but I know that ultimately, the truth is empowering, and those that know the truth feel empowered to act from a place of peace and understanding, to create a world where another 9/11 can never happen again. This list of 11 Remarkable Facts About 9/11 is provided courtesy of 911sharethetruth.com, where you can find a plethora of resources listing over a hundred other unanswered questions and anomalies in the official story of 9/11:
1 ) The Mysterious Collapse of World Trade Center Building 7: It is commonly known that the Twin Towers fell on 9/11, but did you know that a third World Trade Center high-rise building also fell that day? WTC Building 7, a 47-story steel-framed skyscraper located one block from the Twin Towers was not hit by any plane, but collapsed at 5:20 that evening, imploding in the exact manner of a professionally engineered demolition. It fell suddenly, straight down, at near freefall speed, and landed in a compact pile of rubble, barely damaging any of the surrounding buildings. These are but a few of eleven characteristics of Building 7’s collapse that are consistent only with controlled demolitions. Further, the leaseholder of the three buildings, Larry Silverstein, said in 2002 on PBS that on the afternoon of 9/11 he suggested to the NYC fire department commander that they “pull” WTC 7. “Pull” is an industry term that refers to a controlled demolition, but the normal time it takes a team of skilled people to design and implement large demolitions is several weeks. Astonishingly, there is no mention of WTC Building 7’s remarkable collapse in the 571-page 9/11 Commission Report.
2 ) Fire has never — prior to or after 9/11 — caused any steel frame building to collapse. The sudden, vertical, explosive, and total collapse of the Twin Towers at near freefall speed can only be explained by controlled demolition.
3 ) The WTC steel, which if fully examined could have revealed the effects of explosives, was quickly shipped overseas and melted down. This was an unprecedented violation of federal crime scene laws.
4 ) Whenever contact is lost with any airplane, fighter jets routinely take to the air to investigate. This commonly occurs about 100 times per year in well under 20 minutes. But on 9/11 nearly two hours passed without any interception.
5 ) The Secret Service broke established protocols by allowing President Bush to remain in a well-publicized classroom “photo op” long after it was known that the U.S. was under attack and he might well have been a target.
6 ) Unidentified insiders made millions on the stocks of American and United Airlines and those of other corporations that were likewise impacted by the attacks. These “put option” bets were made just prior to 9/11.
7 ) There were warnings of the impending attacks from at least eleven other countries. Also prior to 9/11, insiders such as John Ashcroft, top military officers, and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown were warned not to fly.
8 ) In September of 2000, a group of neocon hawks (The Project For A New American Century, mentioned above), many of whom would become key officials in the Bush administration, wrote that their proposed massive military buildup would proceed slowly “absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event — like a new Pearl Harbor.”
9 ) Some of the alleged 9/11 “suicide hijackers” are still alive and well, according to the UK’s The Guardian and the BBC. (This was reported in a previous Hot Potato article “Becoming the Media, Part 1″. The BBC has since retracted this story without explanation, but British papers The Telegraph and The Independent printed similar stories which have not been retracted). At least five of the alleged hijackers may have trained at U.S. military bases, as reported in Newsweek and other sources.
10 ) The Bush administration resisted the formation of the 9/11 Commission for 441 days. Similar investigations, such as those for Pearl Harbor, the JFK assassination, and the space shuttle disasters, all started in about one week.
11) “The Jersey Girls” — four courageous 9/11 widows — finally forced the 9/11 Commission into existence and presented many questions, most of which were ignored. Under the leadership of Bush administration insider Philip Zelikow, the final report failed to address any of the evidence pointing to official complicity.
THE 9/11 TRUTH MOVEMENT
9/11 Truth rally and march in Los Angeles. For the entire week of September 11, 2007, rallies, film screenings, and teach-ins for 9/11 Truth were held in dozens of cities across the U.S. and internationally.
In a recent Zogby poll of New York City residents, nearly 52% said they doubt the official story of 9/11, while 38% said they believe that elements within the government were directly responsible for planning and carrying out the 9/11 attacks. These are alarming figures, and illustrate one of two possibilities. Either the residents of New York City are “crazy conspiracy-theorist nutjobs”, or they’ve caught onto something legitimate that isn’t being reported by the majority of government officials or the mainstream media, just like those who years ago saw through the “magic bullet” official story of JFK’s assassination and realized, rightly, that there was far more to the story than was being reported.
On September 9-11, 2007, the largest rallies ever held by the 9/11 Truth movement took place internationally. In Washington, D.C., New York City, Seattle, Los Angeles, Brussels, Rome, Calgary, and dozens of other cities, thousands, including several family members of 9/11 victims, gathered to call for a reopening of the 9/11 investigations and to illuminate some of the unanswered questions of that day. Featured speakers at these rallies included former World Trade Center janitor William Rodriguez (see the video trailer of a documentary about Rodriguez at the end of this article) , the last person to leave the North Tower alive, who heard explosions in the basement of the building prior to collapse; and scholar David Ray Griffin, whose books The New Pearl Harbor and The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions are considered definitive works on the subject of 9/11’s unanswered questions and who stood to benefit from the attacks.
Two presidential candidates from both sides of the aisle have stated that they believe there are unanswered questions surrounding 9/11. Republican Congressman Ron Paul, also featured in The Truth and Lies of 9/11, has expressed that he believes certain aspects of the 9/11 investigation are incomplete. Presidential Candidate and Democratic Congressman Dennis Kucinich has announced that he is going to reopen investigations into certain financial questions surrounding 9/11 over the coming weeks. Other former and current government officials, like former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, have joined the 9/11 Truth movement in expressing skepticism over the official story and have joined in the call for justice.
HONOR THROUGH PEACE AND JUSTICE
What does it mean, to honor the heroes and the fallen? it means that we should work for a world where no more 9/11’s can happen, by seeking the truth of what really happened that day, holding the true perpetrators accountable, and ending the wars that are still being carried out in the name of those who died. It means that the 9/11 investigations must be reopened, and that an independent 9/11 commission, free of political ties (such as the head of the 9/11 commission co-authoring a book and being old friends with Condoleeza Rice), must be formed as part of the new investigation to ensure that nothing will be omitted or whitewashed.
It means we must stop selling weapons and providing financial support and training to countries that support terrorism and repressive, non-democratic policies. The Taliban, Al-Qaeda, and Saddam Hussein’s regime were originally trained, armed, and financed by the United States. It also means we must stop training terrorists on our own soil, as is still being done at the Northern Hemispheric Institute For International Security Cooperation (NHIISC), formerly the School of the Americas, at Fort Bening, Georgia. For many years at this school, students from countries all over the world, mainly from South and Central America, have been trained in elements of torture and the silencing of organized dissent. Many graduates have gone on to work within repressive, fascist regimes, overthrowing democratically elected governments, taking part in the imprisonment and massacre of countless thousands of innocent men, women, and children. Some graduates of this school, like General Hugo Banzer Suarez of Bolivia and General Manuel Antonio Callejas y Callejas of Guatemala, even went on to become military dictators with U.S. support. Every year thousands of people from across the country travel to Fort Benning to participate in an annual protest to shut down this U.S.-supported terrorist training camp. If the U.S. wants to take a huge step toward eradicating terrorism, it should stop training and arming terrorists, period.
Ultimately, to honor those who died on 9/11 means that we should seek to address and heal the root causes of terrorism and violence: by ending our support of torture and abuse in all forms; by working to eradicate poverty in the Middle East, our own country, and elsewhere; by ceasing the prejudice of framing Islam as a religion of hatred and violence; and by emphasizing peaceful solutions to conflict while ending the U.S.’s imperialistic wars with Iraq and Afghanistan and ending the occupation of those countries. True justice can never be established by violent retribution. By working for peace and striving to tell the true story of 9/11, we honor those whose lives were lost on that day and their families who live on by at last establishing truth, justice, and accountability in their names.

Be careful, though about claiming that Ron Paul believes that there is a cover-up about 9/11. He has stated in a radio interview that he has no reason to not believe the official story. He is not a “truther”

Probably the very best 9/11 Truth website I’ve come across is 911proof.com, which contains a concise summary of most of the strongest arguments against the official story.
Also very good, especially on the physical evidence, are Jim Hoffman’s websites: 9-11 Research, The hidden story of Building 7, and 9-11 Review.
I personally think it’s important to emphasize the strongest evidence, because the weaker evidence (or, in some cases, downright sloppiness or even outright hoaxes) can be so easily used to discredit us.
As for the videos, I haven’t yet seen a 9/11 video that I personally would feel fully comfortable recommending. I have major issues with all the ones I’ve seen so far. The “Oil Empire” site recommends a bunch on this page; I have not seen these yet.
